Conference looks at GLBT issues across the life-span

Columbus "Coming Out and Staying Out" is the focus of the ninth annual “A Matter of Pride" conference, organized by Amethyst, Inc., Women's Outreach for Women, Stonewall Columbus, the Buckeye Regional Anti-Violence Organization, and Southeast, Inc. The conference is offered each year to educate mental health, substance abuse and social service providers and consumers about the issues of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people

"All service providers will encounter GLBT clients, and since culturally diverse

and effective services are much needed, education on these issues is crucial," said Amy Crawford, conference coordinator and Women's Outreach for Women program director. "In addition, we want to provide consumers with resources and information on the services available to them." she said.

Ritch Savin-Williams will present the keynote address. He is a noted author on GLBT youth, and a professor of clinical and developmental psychology at Cornell University, where he is director of graduate studies in human development. His six books on

A workshop on the issues of older adults is also planned.

Josette Bodonyi of Southeast Inc., and Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (P-FLAG), will facilitate a workshop on issues that arise between GLBT people and their families. Transgender issues will be addressed in a session led by Meral Crane of the Central Ohio Gender Dysphoria Program, and Ohio Certified Prevention Specialist Jim Ryan will hold a workshop on bisexuality.

The issues of older adults will be covered in a session co-facilitated by private counselor Pamela Chapman and Ted Blumenstein of the group 50 Plus.

A "Coming Out Clean and Sober," workshop will be offered by Flora Lee Clark, LPN, Geneva Sanford of Maryhaven and Kathy Starling, a Stonewall board member

and a longtime 12-step group member. Laurie Green-Lauber and Ed Pfeiffer will lead a parenting workshop.

"A Matter of Pride" was established to create and sustain an affirming environment in social service systems for GLBT people in Central Ohio. Additional sponsors include the Franklin County Alcoholism, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Board, Centre Point Counseling Associates, the Columbus AIDS Task Force, the Columbus chapter of the National Organization for Women, Out on Main restaurant and its Flip Foundation, and P-FLAG.
